Twice a year Iwakuni puts on a show. From late March to early April some three thousand cherry trees flower along both banks of the Nishiki River and through Kikko Park, wrapping the bridge in pale pink; the area is counted among Japan’s hundred best cherry blossom spots.
Then in mid to late November it is the turn of Momijidani Park — “maple valley” — a quiet fold at the foot of the castle hill, laid out among old temple precincts, where the maples burn red and orange over mossy stone and still ponds.
Top things to do: Cherry Blossoms & Momijidani Autumn Leaves
Picnic under the blossom
Do as the locals do: buy food from the stalls that appear in season, find a spot on the riverbank and look up. The row of trees along the west bank beside the bridge is the heart of it, and lanterns are lit in the evening.
See the Kintaikyo Festival
On 29 April a procession in Edo-period costume — a feudal lord’s retinue with bearers, lancers and attendants — crosses the bridge, with performances around the park. The blossom is over by then, but the fresh green is lovely.
Walk Momijidani in November
From the ropeway station it is a few minutes’ walk to Momijidani Park. Paths wind past maples, temple gates and stone lanterns; the graveyard of the Kikkawa lords lies close by. Come in the morning for quiet and soft light.
Photograph the bridge in season
For blossom, shoot from the riverbed with branches framing an arch. For autumn, the view from the castle shows the whole hillside in colour.

How to get there
- Cherry trees: on both riverbanks at Kintaikyo and throughout Kikko Park.
- Momijidani Park: at the back of Kikko Park near the ropeway station, about ten to fifteen minutes on foot from the bridge.
- In peak blossom: roads and car parks fill early; the train and bus are the better choice.
Insider tips
- Blossom dates move with the weather. Check a forecast a week or two ahead and stay flexible.
