Suo-Oshima is one of the largest islands in the Seto Inland Sea, a long ridge of green hills ringed with fishing villages, citrus terraces and sandy coves. A road bridge joins it to the mainland south of Iwakuni, so you can simply drive on.
Many islanders emigrated to Hawaii in the late 19th century, and the connection is still celebrated — hence the nickname “the Hawaii of the Inland Sea”, the aloha shirts worn in summer and a small museum about the emigrants. Mostly, though, people come for slow roads, sea views and mikan oranges.
Top things to do: Suo-Oshima Island
Drive the coast
Cross the Oshima Bridge and follow the shore road past villages and beaches, stopping at roadside stations for local citrus, jam and seafood.
Climb to a viewpoint
Roads and trails lead up to hilltop lookouts with wide panoramas of the Inland Sea and its scatter of islands.
Swim or laze on a beach
In summer the island’s sandy beaches are popular with families from the mainland; the water is calm and warm.
Learn the Hawaii story
A museum in a restored house documents the islanders who left for the Hawaiian sugar plantations and what they brought back.

How to get there
- By car: under an hour from Iwakuni to the bridge; the island is about 30 km long, so allow a day.
- By train and bus: JR Sanyo Line to Obatake, about 35–40 minutes from Iwakuni, then local buses onto the island — workable but slow.
Insider tips
- A rental car makes all the difference here; public buses are infrequent.
- Mikan season is late autumn into winter, when stalls sell them by the bag.
- Combine with Yanai, which is on the way.
